Who’s Hot and Who’s Not: Week 1

In an attempt to keep this blog more active I’ve decided to add a weekly section to Whitsport. Over the course of the 2009/2010 Premier League season, I’ll post a blog each week titled “Who’s Hot and Who’s Not”. I vow to do my best in keeping things interesting, and I’ll try to highlight the players that don’t dominate football headlines week in and week out (Lampard, Gerrard, etc.)  So with that said, here goes nothing…

After a long summer (yea, that’s right… 82 days is an eternity!) the English Premier League returned with a bang. A load of away wins, a blow out and a big four upset dominated the headlines. But which player deserves to be the talk to the town?

HOT: Cesc Fabregas cesc

With 2 goals and 2 assists in a opening day romp of Everton, Fabregas captained the Gunners in all facets of the game. His set piece strikes seemed magnetically attracted to the heads of teammates… his his runs down the length of the pitch were a work of art… and his precise shots on goal left a distraught Everton defense even more humiliated.

Honarable mentions: Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Sebastien Bassong (Tottenham), Shay Given (Manchester City)

ashleyNOT: Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

When Gareth Barry and Martin Laursen left Villa Park, the weight of the world fell on the shoulders of the young England starlet. But by the end of Saturday’s contest with Wigan, it was evident that Ashley Young might not be ready to have greatness thrust upon him. A pesky Latic defense, coupled by his own short comings, led Young feeling frsutrated and empty-handed on opening day.

Dishonorable mentions: Joleon Lescott (Everton), Jamie Carragher (Liverpool), Stephen Jordan (Burnley)

Check back next week for more “Who’s HOT and Who’s NOT”…
