It’s a fresh Premier League season

Ahh yes, the smell of a brand new Premier League season… I’m sorry; did you not realize that the EPL season does not truly start until the first manager has been sacked? Or in this case, when the first managers, plural, resign over control issues…

Well the 08-09 season is certainly underway, and while West Ham and Newcastle search for new bosses, life in the rest of the Premier League goes on. Perhaps King Kev and Curbishley have jobs waiting for them at Leeds, oooh, that was a low blow; my apologies! Anyway, this season has not only included some surprising starts, but some huge transfers, as well as some funny stories. When I began my blog, I figured it would mainly consist of me ranting and raving each week about the Premier League and which player I’d most like to tackle, spikes up! Well I’ve revised my outlook on football blogging and have decided to instead make sense of where teams currently rank.

Below are two lists, on the left are where I predicted teams to finish on August 1st. Now, on September 9th, I see things a bit differently, as shown on the right:

1. Chelsea ……………1. Chelsea

2. Man Utd …………..2. Man Utd

3. Liverpool ………….3. Liverpool

4. Arsenal …………….4. Man City

5. Spurs ……………….5. Arsenal

6. Everton …………….6. Aston Villa

7. Aston Villa ………..7. Portsmouth

8. Portsmouth ……….8. Everton

9. Man City …………..9. Spurs

10. Blackburn ……….10. West Ham

11. Newcastle ……….11. Blackburn

12. West Ham ……….12. Middlesboro

13. Sunderland ……..13. Wigan

14. Middlesboro ……14. Newcastle

15. Wigan …………….15. Sunderland

16. Fulham …………..16. Fulham

17. West Brom ………17. Stoke City

18. Bolton ……………18. Bolton

19. Stoke City ………19. Hull

20. Hull ………………20. West Brom

Before, I figured a healthy Chelsea team could run away with the EPL crown, after an impressive offseason, and not much improvement amongst the other Top-4 teams. I still think Chelsea will win the League, even after failing to solidify their status up front with Robinho going to Man City. I do think, however, that a healthy Ronaldo, Gerrard, and Torres can help their clubs give Chelsea a run for their money. As for Manchester City, it looks like their new owners are determined to shake things up by planting a slew of money trees along the pitch at Eastlands. More big money signings look to be eminent in January, and Man City could make huge leaps and bounds. I don’t expect them to challenge for the title, but should make things interesting.

Rounding up the top 10, Everton looks dreadful at home, and could use some coffee for their fullbacks. Pompey, despite a slow start should be solid, remember they played Chelsea and Man United first two weeks of the season… they’re better than their record indicates. Aston Villa also looks even better than last year, and deeper too; could prove to be a very impressive season. On the downside, Spurs spent a lot of money and will have to wait to reap the benefits of their investments. It looks as though things will take longer to gel than expected.

On the bottom half of the table, Hull looked impressive initially, but after a 5-nil thrashing at the hands of Wigan, that’s right Amr Zaki fans, their trip down from cloud 9 looks to have been a rough one. I expect Hull and West Brom to be sent back to Championship division. Stoke on the other hand, looks much more poised to stay up, they have some really good young players up front and at midfield, who should help the Potters remain in top flight football. As for the rest of the bunch, Boro and West Ham look better than expected, while Sunderland and Newcastle may be in for more of a fight than their fans would like.

All in all, it is shaping up to be an interesting season. I will be watching each game with great anticipation, and hope that when it’s all said and done… I win my fantasy football league, ha! Cheers!
